Latch-Key Program

As part of the current desegregation effort, latch-key programs have been implemented at a number of city schools. Designed to provide additional support for working parents, the latch-key programs provide for early drop-offs and late pick-ups of children. We propose to extend the latch-key program to each of the 126 schools in the SLSD.

The latch-key programs would be run by the YMCA, on School Board property. The hours of operation would be from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., before school, and then after school, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Each site would be able to serve 48 children. The following figures were supplied by Karen Kocher, Senior Program Director at the South City YMCA, and are based on existing latch-key programs.

With Social Security and Workmen's Compensation included, the staffing cost per hour per facility is $16.85. Three staff members at each site = 378 employees.
